A visit to First Mile Kitchen landed us in Wichita's east side.

Wichita’s East Side

Over the years, we have made many trips to the largest city in Kansas. While we usually focus on the downtown region, we recently took time to check out Wichita’s east side. This suburban region is filled with the residents who keep this city running, so we were anxious to sample some new finds. What began as Bradley Farm, has grown into a vibrant community. Come with us as we explore this centerpiece of modern convenience.

First Mile Kitchen is a premier restaurant in Wichita's east side.

First Tastes

While we have enjoyed numerous delectable meals in Wichita, we were looking forward to seeing what we would find at Bradley Fair.  The best way to do that is to jump head-first into dinner. Our arrival in town had us on the east side by late afternoon. With time to kill before our reservation, we did a little shopping. There are plenty of boutiques to keep us occupied and in the end, we were almost late to dinner. Fortunately, First Mile Kitchen was in the same shopping center, so that helped. Stepping through the door, we found ourselves in a casually upscale setting. The hostess seated us and we set ourselves to the task of choosing the perfect meals.

A salad and pork chop make for a hearty meal in Wichita's east side.

Hearty Dishes

Hunger had overtaken me, so I didn’t hold back with my order. I began with a Wedge Salad and included a Cucumber Gin Gimlet to wash it down. The huge slab of bacon complimented the Blue Cheese and this dish disappeared quickly. For my main course, I selected the Pork Chop, which is butterflied. At 18 oz., this is a mountain of protein. They serve it resting on a bed of mashed sweet potatoes and accompanied by grilled greens. I suppose my eyes must have been bigger than my stomach because I was unable to finish the meal.

It's hard to top a filet for flavor and tenderness.

A Prime Meal

Crystal decided to go with the Wood Fired Filet, which looked just as delicious. Cooked to perfection, it was served on a bed of horseradish mashed potatoes. Resting nearby were some grilled carrots. The red wine demi-glace and herbed butter brought additional layers of flavor to the dish. I watched in amazement as she methodically destroyed her meal. Clearly, she was enjoying the taste.

Our lodging offered a peaceful escape from the city rush.

Peaceful Setting

With dinner a recent memory, it was time to check into our hotel. The Hilton Garden Inn is conveniently located right behind the shopping center. A short drive and we were there. After checking into our room, we decided to explore the small lake that we spotted behind the hotel. A paved path leads walkers around the water and offers views from all angles. What a nice perk to discover on Wichita’s east side.

Jeff steals a bite before Crystal can stop him.

Enjoying Wichita's East Side

After a good night’s rest, we were ready to explore. A day filled with midtown attractions reminded us why we enjoy this city. Sitting just a 3-hour drive from home, we always have this option for a quick escape. The previous evening we had spotted a dessert shop named Bakesale Treat Parlor. Our window shopping had us eyeballing their delectable cookies, so we made sure to swing by before our drive home. I couldn’t wait to sample it, much to Crystal’s surprise. Fortunately, she forgave me for being so impatient. What can I say? I love a good cookie.
