Going On Safari – Topeka Zoo

Spending time with our grandkids has opened up opportunities to visit some fun destinations. Being able to share our love for zoos with them helps us build a stronger bond while learning more about the world we live in. A recent excursion had us going on safari to the Topeka Zoo for a morning filled with exploration. An overcast late summer day was the perfect time for us to observe and interact with other species. We want to thank the Topeka Zoo for hosting our visit. Rest assured all opinions are our own.  How You Doing? The Topeka Zoo is located in the [...]

Hemp Bales And Bluffs – Battle Of Lexington, Missouri

Smoke hung heavy around the Oliver Anderson home. Bullet holes pockmarked the brick walls of the house. This early battle of the Civil War had been sparked by the seizure of money by Federal troops. Now they found themselves outnumbered and in short supply of a most important resource.  The battle was entering its third day and victory was in sight for the Confederate troops. Our visit to the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site would lay out the details of this three-day battle in Lexington, Missouri. Here we would learn how hemp bales and bluffs ended up securing a victory for the [...]

Day-tripping In Boonville, Missouri

Located in the heart of the state of Missouri, you will find the city of Boonville. While many pass by the exit along I-70, we went day-tripping in Boonville to learn more of the city's historical significance. Transportation has seemed to have played a huge role in this Midwest destination, even before it was founded. Lying along the Missouri River, the region was home to native Indian tribes for thousands of years. They were the first to understand the value of the nearby salt licks. Lewis and Clark passed through the area in 1805, as they explored the lands of the Louisiana Purchase. [...]

Parkville Nature Sanctuary – A Walk On The Wild Side

Looking for an escape from the city without having to leave the city? Some of our friends have been giving us suggestions on places to visit. When a few told us details about the Parkville Nature Sanctuary, it seemed like the perfect place to take a walk on the wild side. These days long distance travel requires an unprecedented amount of preparation. That seems to be good enough reason to find activities and destinations closer to home. Seeing that we have done a lot of exploring in Parkville, we had to wonder why we hadn't visited this site sooner. Parkville Nature Sanctuary We [...]

Iron District – Taking It Outside

It seems that people are coming up with new ways to re-purpose familiar items all of the time. Finding alternative uses for shipping containers seemed to be a logical next step. A visit to North Kansas City, Missouri showed us how one group of ingenious people had built a space that combines function and frugality into one. The Iron District is a destination space comprised of locally-owned eateries, boutique shops, and entertainment options. All of this is wrapped up into shiny metal boxes. Incubating New Businesses The idea of creating a business park with shipping containers isn't new to us. We first saw [...]

History Lessons In Arrow Rock, Missouri

How many times have you overlooked a small town, because you didn't think it had much to see? If we are being honest, this happens too often, because we have been programmed to believe this. Creating our travel blog has opened our eyes and minds to the wonderful collection of artifacts found in villages and towns across North America. One of our day trips provided history lessons about the Village of Arrow Rock, Missouri. This town of about 55 residents has seen a lot of changes since the first trading post was erected in 1814. A Thorough History Lesson Our first stop was [...]

Escape The City To Weston, Missouri

Travel is an opportunity to escape the city we live in and to see new destinations with fresh eyes. 2020 has certainly presented an array of challenges to traveling, but not complete barriers. We are learning ways to enjoy the adventures we have grown to love while keeping ourselves and others safe. This is important for all travelers to remember, as it is our duty to be wise ambassadors wherever we may roam. With so much uncertainty swirling around, we have rethought our approach to travel for the immediate future. Our focus will be on less densely populated regions. This will offer all [...]

Loosening The Lockdown – The New Normal?

The sun shone brightly, casting its warmth on the cool May morning. Early shoppers arrived in downtown Kansas City to bring some normalcy back into their lives. With the Stay At Home orders being slowly rescinded, some of the public are venturing out to places that seem strangely familiar. We visited City Market to see how the new paradigm is being applied to one of our favorite summer activities. Loosening the lockdown at the farmer's market is a good test for how the general public will handle the new protocols for social interaction. Social Distancing While Loosening the Lockdown Heading out of the [...]

Sunshine and Social Distancing – Ha Ha Tonka State Park

As I sit and write this article, we are currently under self-imposed isolation called "social distancing". While the subject is near and dear to everyone at this stage, I have to wonder what readers will think when they return to this particular article in two or three years. How will our daily interactions change, once this quarantine period ends? We are only a couple of weeks in and people are already becoming anxious to return to some semblance of normal life. Knowing that we wanted to limit human interaction, we chose a day trip to Ha Ha Tonka State Park. This excursion would [...]

Seeing The Details – Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Variety keeps life from becoming boring. You can imagine what it would be like if every museum was exactly the same. Each would hold the same static displays and spout the same factoids. Fortunately, this isn't the case. Each history museum has its own approach to telling stories from the past. We also have a nice selection of subjects to choose from. On one of our visits to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, we took the time to enjoy one of their annual events. With this particular museum being in our hometown, we have plenty of opportunities to visit. Seeing the details in [...]
