Amtrak Escape – All Aboard For Hermann, Missouri

It's hard to believe we had never taken a real train trip. The stories that friends have told, about experiencing the views along the rolling tracks, have intrigued us. It is just that we have always fallen back on the reasoning that we would need our car for convenience. The day finally came when we had to set aside the excuses and planned our first Amtrak escape. Hemp Bales And Bluffs – Battle Of Lexington, Missouri

Smoke hung heavy around the Oliver Anderson home. Bullet holes pockmarked the brick walls of the house. This early battle of the Civil War had been sparked by the seizure of money by Federal troops. Now they found themselves outnumbered and in short supply of a most important resource.  The battle was entering its third day and victory was in sight for the Confederate troops. Our visit to the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site would lay out the details of this three-day battle in Lexington, Missouri. Here we would learn how hemp bales and bluffs ended up securing a victory for the [...]

Day-tripping In Boonville, Missouri

Located in the heart of the state of Missouri, you will find the city of Boonville. While many pass by the exit along I-70, we went day-tripping in Boonville to learn more of the city's historical significance. Transportation has seemed to have played a huge role in this Midwest destination, even before it was founded. Lying along the Missouri River, the region was home to native Indian tribes for thousands of years. They were the first to understand the value of the nearby salt licks. Lewis and Clark passed through the area in 1805, as they explored the lands of the Louisiana Purchase. [...]

Sunshine and Social Distancing – Ha Ha Tonka State Park

As I sit and write this article, we are currently under self-imposed isolation called "social distancing". While the subject is near and dear to everyone at this stage, I have to wonder what readers will think when they return to this particular article in two or three years. How will our daily interactions change, once this quarantine period ends? We are only a couple of weeks in and people are already becoming anxious to return to some semblance of normal life. Knowing that we wanted to limit human interaction, we chose a day trip to Ha Ha Tonka State Park. This excursion would [...]

Past To Present In Jefferson City

To think that we have lived within a short three-hour drive of Missouri's capital, yet it has taken us so long to visit. Wanting to get a better understanding of the history of the city, from past to present in Jefferson City, we planned a day filled with unique stops. We have learned that local tourism bureau's websites are one of the best resources for building a solid itinerary. Even if you like to just wing it, having a basic knowledge of a city's sites [...]

Couples Escape In Parkville, Missouri

Kansas City developed much like other large metropolitan areas. Its expansion often came from incorporating nearby towns and neighborhoods, as it pushed its borders out from the urban core. Some of these townships retained their identity, even as the city limits pushed beyond their borders. We find that each has its unique history and local flavors that are fun to explore. A weekend outing offered a couples escape in Parkville, Missouri. This river town has plenty to offer visitors, so lets look at some of our favorites. We want to thank Main Street Parkville for their hospitality. Rest assured all opinions are our [...]
