A photo of Janis Joplin is udsed to identify which customer's order is being delivered. It's holder rests beside jars of pepper flakes and grated parmesan cheese., as well as a bottle of soda. They all sit atop a checkered tablecloth in a pizza shop that is in a converted garage.

Hit the Mother Lode at Pizza 51

Some days the good things just fall into your lap. Pizza 51 West, at 5938 Mission Road was one of these good things. On a Sunday afternoon we were running late for having lunch. A quick check of the maps on my phone showed a pizza joint was fairly close to our location. Without any previous research we decided to just wing it, and drop in for a bite.Continue reading

How to Dine for Less – Bryant’s Barbecue

In Kansas City, when you mention barbecue you will hear a ton of various comments. Some talk up the smoke ring, while others focus on the sauces. Conversations will circle around which cuts are the best, and at which locations. The number of variations will make your head spin, but one thing most people will agree on is that dining out on barbecue can be costly. We visited Bryant’s Barbecue to put this impression to the test.Continue reading

Long Standing Tradition at Dagwood’s Cafe

The Rosedale section of KCK is filled with small to medium sized businesses, in and around the “Boulevard”. This area was founded early in the city’s life, and has had it’s ups and downs over the years. Flooding has always been a fear of the residents and business owners in this low lying land. While these trials have tested, and broken many companies, some have remained steadfast through the years. One of these is Dagwood’s Cafe at 1117 Southwest Blvd. Upon entering, you find diners lining the counter or spread out at the tables. People on their way to work mingle with families enjoying a break from their hectic days. Everyone seems to be relaxed here, and the coffee flows freely.Continue reading

Real Food For Real People at Wolfe-es Restaurant

The residents of Armourdale are hard working people who value their money, but enjoy spending time with their neighbors. This is apparent when you visit Wolfe-es Restaurant located at 842 Osage Avenue. The Armourdale area of Kansas City, Kansas is one of the older sections of the city. What began around 1880 was a base for many of the meat packing companies that called Kansas City home. The area has been subjected to near total devastation from floods in 1903, and again in 1951. Through all of this, many families have continued to call this area home. Continue reading

Pull Up to Paul’s Drive in

Every city has a handful of places that are wildly popular, and well known. In Kansas City, Kansas, one of these is Paul’s Drive-in located in the Armourdale region. Those who frequent Paul’s know that it will never be known as a health food store. That is not what their business is founded on. Paul’s serves up the type of greasy spoon food that is packed full of flavor. I’m not sure when they first opened, but I do know they have been serving up baskets of delicious food for as long as I can remember.Continue reading

Plenty to Eat at Italian Delight

In 1971, a brand new indoor mall opened in Kansas City, Kansas. People from all around the region flocked to Indian Springs Mall to shop, be entertained, mingle, people watch, and eat. Italian Delight was among the restaurants to call it home. For years this was the place to grab a quick bite or a drink in the mall. People lounged over their meals, while watching the crowds pass by. It was a place to be seen. Many of us came for the pizza. The hot, gooey slices came with an almost limitless choice of topping combinations. The bubbly crust was tender with just the right amount of crispiness. Continue reading

Turner Tradition at Christy’s Tasty Queen

We all know of a roadside diner that serves up a specialty, which is an experience all on it’s own. Some places are known for their chili or sliders, while others focus on a specific side dish. It seems like most places find at least one menu item that becomes synonymous with their name. The same can be said for Christy’s Tasty Queen, located at 1405 S 55th Street in Turner, Kansas.  This diminutive stop beckons diners with fresh fried menu items, and cold sugary treats. It is also home to a tenderloin sandwich that has a following of it’s own.Continue reading
